Make a Flat-Lay Product Image with a Clear Hierarchy
A flat lay can show a product and its context in one frame. Its main risk is that every object receives equal attention. Plan the arrangement so the viewer immediately knows what the image is about.

A practical approach
- Choose one hero object and two or three supporting elements at most. The supporting objects should explain use or mood, not fill space simply because it is available.
- Create breathing room around the hero. Avoid tangencies where a handle, leaf or fabric edge touches the product in a visually confusing way.
- Use consistent overhead lighting and a restrained surface texture. A busy background can compete with the product when the image is viewed as a small thumbnail.
An example to adapt
Use this as a creative brief, then adjust it to your own subject and the controls available in your chosen tool.
Top-down flat lay of a closed notebook centered on a pale wooden desk, one pencil to its right and a folded linen cloth in the upper-left corner. Soft even daylight, generous spacing, no text added.
Before you publish
Reduce the image to thumbnail size. If a prop attracts attention before the product, move it farther away, lower its contrast or remove it from the brief.
